Papasan Chair

Originally from the far east, the papasan chair made it over to America in the 1950s and has been a popular choice of furniture ever since. Typically, they consist of a cone shaped base, which supports a dish shaped cushion for the user to sit in. Initially, the base would normally be made of rattan as the wood was so abundant in the areas that the chair originated from. Today, the bases can be made of other kinds of wood such as wicker. Some non traditional variants will even be made of steel for added strength (though this is not usually necessary).

One of the strengths of this kind of chair is that due to the two part design, the cushion can be set at any angle the user would like for maximum comfort. Many modern adjustable chairs can be very expensive due to complicated design, but the elegant papasan solution allows for a high level of adjustability at a fraction of the cost.

A simple design that allows for a lot of comfort, it is hard to ignore this piece of furniture considering its benefits together with the fact that such a simple design is relatively inexpensive to own. However, many people don’t just buy a unique chair like a papasan for how good it feels to sit in – generally customers are also aiming for a certain look that only papasan chairs can provide.

The chairs became hugely popular in the 1970s after developing a reputation as a must have piece of chic furniture in any good 70s home. The unique look combined with the sheer variety of covers made for a standout yet versatile chair that could be found in many houses, homes and student bedsits. Today, people seek out a papasan chair whether they are aiming for retro chic or simply like the look that is again coming to prominence.
